Game-Based Performance Tasks for NGSS

This Spring quarter, UCLA CRESST (Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing) will be conducting a study using interactive, game-based performance tasks designed for TK, kindergarten, and first grade.  CRESST researcher Liz Redman will administer game-based performance tasks (GPPTs) assessment designed to measure young children’s understanding of physical science concepts related to force and motion.  Unlike traditional early childhood assessments which rely on one-on-one interviews or observational ratings, GBPTs capture both task outcomes and the processes students use to arrive a their solutions.  The goal is to have an effective tool to assess how well young people (TK, K & !st) are meeting the Next Generation Science Standard (NGSS) performance expectations for force and motion as well as the science content found in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Children will play two game-based tasks on an iPad in school for a total of 40 minutes in one class period. Participation in this study is voluntary and will remain confidential. For more information or any questions about this study please contact  principal investigator Dr. Kilchan Choi  Kilchan@CRESST.org or Dr. Elizabeth Redman. Redman@CRESST.org .
